Weeds and Pests
Much of Division 10 is a working rural community, with cane, cattle, horticulture and aquaculture industries. The balance between the agricultural and tourism industries is very important and has long been at the core of the shire’s success.
Keeping development away from prejudicing agriculture and visa versa, is important here.
With hundreds of kilometers of rural roads, Douglas had just resolved to begin a new approach to drainage in the rural areas, to allow spooning and grassing of once deep cut V shape drains that need poisoning to maintain, but which erode badly into the GBR basin. Part of this approach required hiring or purchase of a slide arm slasher.
This purchase has been postponed until Cairns equipment capability is assessed. Concerns surrounding new evidence about once deemed benign Round Up, have effected our decisions about excessive spraying in areas where young kids and sportsmen/women in contact with the residues, prompting my suggestion to shift to slashing or even steaming to deal with weeds. These new ideas were being investigated in the DSC when the amalgamation show stopper arrived and accordingly, if you support ideas of slashing rather t
han poisoned drains, whether for environmental health, or because you disagree with dead weed streets-capes, then support a candidate who supports better weed management practices.
